Here's a new one. I'm working on something that has a bit of an 'old west' theme and needed some terminology to help with the headers. Check out the OLD WEST WRITER'S GUIDE Looks great.... and I think that there are lots…

Great collection, AP. I haven't seen any of these. Do they have one that bonks you over the head with a hammer so you don't work late and can actually get enough sleep? I could use that.

Sites to jump-start your brain

OK.... at least they are a few of the sites I go to when "my thinker's stuck."http://www.onesentence.org/ I think this is one of the best sites I've encountered. They also let your review some of the one sentence stories that 'didn't make the cut' and vote to give them a second chance. Or not.http://writeordie.drwicked.com/ I haven't used this one personally... but I know that it's a popular…See More

Agree. We just have to figure out how best to leverage it. I still think an online university with 2-3 live workshops a year is the way to go.

I think the best way to manage ongoing conversations is to go to your My Page and see what's up. This bar is good for shout-outs.

Stagger your projects

One of the biggest issues for any self-employed person is cash flow. Whether you're a lawyer, artist or writer, if you work for yourself you become accustomed to the "feast or famine" dynamic. That is, some months you close out two or three clients and get paid big bucks. Other months, you're in mid-project or case and you're rubbing two nickels together in the hopes of starting a fire to warm your cold apartment. It's a constant battle, and one of the better ways to manage it (you'll never… Continue

Self-publish your book

I run into a lot of frustrated novelists, short story writers and essayists who lament their inability to get a publishing deal. So many still cling to the outdated idea that they will write their great literary work, find a big New York publisher who recognizes their genius, cash in a huge advance and become a rich celebrity author along the lines of a Michael Chabon or Rebecca Wells. But since they have no idea how to make this dream come true, they spend years laboring over a project that… Continue

Notes

Self-publishing

Resource: Lulu.com

What: Print on demand self-publishing and editorial services
Why: They do a great job and don't ask you to buy an editorial package before you can upload and start selling your book.
Services: Everything, including good quality POD books. Printing and delivery are a bit poky, and they keep your credit card info on file, which some folks don't like.  But for $1300 they'll edit…
